James Fisher Marine Services completes oil exchange, reducing downtime by circa 50%

James Fisher Marine Services (JFMS) completes second gearbox exchange project at Thornton Banks II & III using its industry-recognised Ship-to-Turbine™ system to significantly improve operational efficiency, safety and productivity.

The scope included the removal and replacement of gearbox oil on 25 x 6MW and 2 x 5MW turbines at Belgium’s first offshore wind farm, located in the North Sea, for Senvion –one of the leading manufacturers of onshore and offshore wind turbines.

Katrin Rosendahl, spokesperson of Senvion Holding GmbH, said:

“We’re happy about the successful cooperation with a professional partner such as James Fisher Marine Services. If we need services provided by external partners, we always rely on industry experts to ensure the best solution for our clients.”

The revolutionary Ship-to-Turbine™ unit is purpose built by JFMS, part of James Fisher and Sons plc, and is a safer, cleaner and faster method to exchange oils in wind turbines. The system employs proven technology to transfer oil from a self-contained deck mounted unit, through umbilical hoses, directly eliminating the need to fill and hoist containers via the nacelle crane.

Successful trials demonstrated a considerable increase in productivity, reducing oil change operations to just four hours pumping time per turbine.

Martin Myhill Sisley, managing director of JFMS renewables services, said:

“We’re very pleased that the project was once again completed without any contaminants or spills, re-affirming our successful partnership with Senvion. We’re at the forefront of technology in this area and Ship-to-Turbine™ is streets ahead of anything else on the market, complemented by our in-house equipment and skills.”

With the increase in oil exchange units JFMS is now able to extend its integrated approach offering, including the following services:

  • Gearbox and hydraulic oil exchange (including consumables)
  • Balance of Plant (BoP) and statutory inspections
  • Structural repair and rectification
  • Blade inspection, repair and maintenance (IRM)
  • Vessel and port logistics
